Modernising WFS

The previous versions of the OGC Web Feature Service (WFS) standard used a Remote-Procedure-Call-over-HTTP architectural style using XML for payloads as it was state-of-the-art in the late 1990s and early 2000s, when WFS was originally designed. Based on our experiences with using ldproxy, interactive instruments has proposed to develop the next version of WFS as a modernised service, based on the current Web architecture and the W3C/OGC best practices for sharing Spatial Data on the Web.

We are pleased about the positive response of the OGC membership and the wider community to our proposal. We are also enthusiastic that the whole process is now open to the public – drafts and discussions are all on GitHub – and targets developers.
